How to Engage New and Returning Website Visitors

You’ll need a WordPress site and the MailOptin plugin for this guide.

What is MailOptin?


MailOptin is a form builder and popup builder for creating popups, subscribe forms, user registration form and sending email newsletters.

Step 1 – Install and activate the MailOptin plugin

Proceed by downloading and installing the MailOptin plugin on your WordPress site. From the WordPress admin panel, go to Plugins -> Add New and click the Add New button. Install the plugin on your WordPress site by uploading the zip file.

Step 2 – Create a new optin campaign

We need to create two optin campaigns to show to new and returning site users because we want to engage both types of visitors.

To begin, go to Optin Campaigns -> Add New and enter a name for your campaign. Choose Lightbox as the type.

You may start creating a call to action for new visitors to your website by selecting a pre-designed template. The Letter Box theme has been chosen by us. When you click the Select Theme button, you will be taken to the customization page.

You may begin by modifying the design of the call to action that new visitors to your website will see. The Design tab allows you to customize the Display effect and the Background color.

You can also use the Headline, Description, and Note areas to personalize the message and create an appealing pop-up message for new site users.

Finally, go to the Integrations tab and choose WordPress User Registration as the integration, then choose the User Role you’d like to assign new visitors.

You can also save leads to your contact or email list by integrating any of our supported email marketing software and CRM.

To continue, click the Save Changes button.

Let’s move on to create a new message to entice returning visitors to the site. Select Lightbox from the type drop-down menu after clicking the Add New button.

To begin, choose a theme. The Boldy theme has been chosen by us.

We can delete the default fields and replace them with a CTA button because we need to personalize this for returning visitors. To do so, go to the Fields tab and uncheck the Display Only CTA Button checkbox.

Using the Action After Button, select Navigate to Link. Select your link from the dropdown menu and paste it into the text space below. To continue, click the Save Changes button.

Step 3 – Set targeting display rules

We want to make display criteria that allow us to display each message to each sort of site visitor now that we’ve built distinct messages to be presented to new and returning site visitors when they land on your page.

Select the proper sort of visitor for each optin by going to Customizing -> Display Rules -> New vs Returning Visitors. Select New Visitors from the dropdown menu, for example, if it’s only supposed to be shown to new site visitors.

Step 4 – Preview

Depending on their visit status, different sorts of site users will now see different notifications. New site visitors will be prompted to subscribe to your email newsletter by filling out the optin form with their username and email address:
